Deer Valley Resort Expansion

Deer Valley Resort Expansion

Deer Valley Resort Expansion was recently announced to include a gondola from Park City’s Main St. in Old Town.

#Park City #Utah just keeps making waves in the ski community and the latest bombshell is Deer Valley’s plans to add 1,000 acres of ski terrain and five or six new lifts.  This is on the heels of our recent  big news coming out of Utah with Vail Resorts announced huge plans to spend $50 million to connect Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons Resort.  Now, more details have emerged about Deer Valley Resort’s own expansion.  #DeerValley Resort’s goal is to build a gondola linking the ski slopes with Park City’s Main Street. The gondola is part of the resort’s $60 million master plan to add 1,000 acres of ski terrain and five or six new lifts over the next few years.  This will bring the resort’s total skiable acreage to more than 3,000 acres. With it comes plans for a new lodge, dining area, and possibly lodging at the new base area.

The new acreage at Deer Valley will be located on the resort’s east side below the Sultan Express and Mayflower lift on Bald Mountain.  Mayflower at Deer Valley will be a new real estate community that will extend from the Jordanelle Reservoir to the top of Deer Valley Resort, and encompass approximately 5,000 acres.

In a meeting with the Park City Council, Bob Wheaton, the President and General Manager of Deer Valley Resort, shared Deer Valley’s plan to dramatically increase their ski terrain with eight new lifts, which will serve approximately 1,000 acres of new runs. Wheaton also discussed the Berkshire Hathaway Utah Properties listed development at Mayflower (above the Jordanelle) and expanded residential communities in and around the resort. Most exciting, Wheaton confirmed that Deer Valley intends to try to connect the resort directly to Old Town via a Gondola System.

Deer Valley Resort ExpansionDeer Valley sees a gondola linking the slopes to Main Street as something that will be attractive to skiers, offering a direct route between the resort and the shopping, dining and entertainment strip. Main Street would be pleased to have connections to Deer Valley as well as the Town Lift that now links Park City Mountain Resort to the street.  There are two options, the first option involves two connected gondolas; the second option would involve a single gondola running between Silver Lake Village and Old Town. In addition to providing visitors and locals easy access to the resort, city council members believe this plan will help reduce Park City’s traffic. Construction of a gondola could start as early as the summer of 2016, Wheaton said.

Wheaton relayed that these expansion plans could begin as early as next summer, but that cost (particularly with regards to the gondola) was an issue, and the resort would be cautious. There are also proposed improvements to the parking lots at Snow Park.

All in all, it is safe to say that our Park City Resorts are entering into a phase of serious growth and evolution. We look forward to seeing what the future holds and continuing to share our affinity for our mountain town paradise.
